Chapter 7 - MASQUERADE OF BETRAYAL

Clara moved like a phantom through the shadows of the banquet hall. Her heart was beating in her throat, but every maternal instinct she possessed kept her feet steady.

Approaching the VIP lounge, she saw the two burly guards in dark suits standing with their arms crossed. Thinking quickly, Clara grabbed a full bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon from a passing waiter’s unattended cart.

“Excuse me, gentlemen,” Clara said, altering her voice to sound timid and flustered. “Mr. Julian requested this vintage brought inside for the children’s nanny immediately.”

The first guard frowned, stepping forward. “Mr. Julian didn't say anything about—”

Before he could finish the sentence, Clara swung the heavy champagne bottle with pinpoint accuracy, shattering it against the side of his skull. The guard crumpled to the carpeted floor without a sound.

The second guard reached for his holster, but Clara lunged forward, driving the heel of her boot directly into his kneecap. As he doubled over in agony, she slammed the solid oak lounge door against his face, knocking him flat on his back.

Clara rushed inside and threw the lock.

“Mommy!” Sophia cried out from a velvet sofa.

“Sophia!” Clara ran forward, sweeping her three-year-old daughter and little Eli into her arms simultaneously. Eli was clutching a small teddy bear, his little eyes red from crying, but both children were physically unharmed.

“Mommy, the bad man said we were going on an airplane without you,” Sophia sobbed into Clara’s neck.

“Nobody is taking you anywhere, my brave girl,” Clara whispered fiercely, kissing both children repeatedly. “Mommy’s here. Mr. Nathaniel is here.”

Suddenly, a thunderous crack echoed from the main ballroom outside, followed by gasps of shock from hundreds of wealthy patrons.

Clara turned on the wall-mounted VIP monitor that broadcasted the main stage.

Nathaniel had walked straight onto the dais. He didn't have his weapon drawn, but his presence was so commanding that the security guards on stage froze in their tracks.

“Nathaniel!” Julian stammered into the microphone, his polished veneer cracking in real-time before three hundred influential investors. “You... you shouldn't be here. You are unwell!”

“I am perfectly well, Julian,” Nathaniel’s voice echoed across the massive sound system as he stepped directly in front of the main projector screen. “In fact, I have never seen things more clearly.”

Nathaniel plugged the titanium drive into the master podium console.

Within seconds, the high-definition presentation screens behind Julian switched from corporate revenue graphs to the video recording Evelyn had left behind.

Evelyn’s face filled the twenty-foot displays.

“If Eli ever sees this, Nathaniel needs to know the truth. For six months, Julian and Vance have been tampering with my car and my medication...”

A collective gasp of absolute horror rippled through the elite crowd. Journalists raised their cameras, their flashes strobing like lightning against the stage. Several prominent board members rose from their seats in outrage.

Julian’s face drained of all color. “Turn it off! Cut the power!” he screamed at the technical booth, but Marcus, having arrived in tactical gear, stood over the sound engineers, ensuring the video continued to play.

Knowing he was ruined, Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward the VIP lounge. He pulled a concealed automatic pistol from beneath his tuxedo jacket and aimed it straight at the stage door where Clara was just emerging with the two children.

“If I’m going down, Nathaniel,” Julian shrieked hysterically, “you lose everything too!”
