Chapter 1 - THE BULLET IN MY CHAIR

Harper Ellison has spent six weeks working as a maid at Damian Romano’s heavily guarded Lake Forest estate, determined to remain invisible around one of Chicago’s most feared men. During a formal dinner attended by twenty-two powerful guests, Damian suddenly orders Harper to sit in the empty chair beside him. When he grabs her wrist to move her quickly, Harper’s trauma from an abusive relationship resurfaces, and she violently pulls away and slaps his hand.

Seconds later, a sniper’s bullet tears through the chair Damian had been trying to force her into.

Damian drags Harper beneath the table while his security team responds. The first shooter is taken down, but Damian immediately suspects there is another. Later, estate security chief Gabriel Romano shows Harper the surveillance footage. A red laser targeting dot had reflected off her silver serving tray. Damian saw it before anyone else and moved Harper without explaining because he had only seconds to save her.

Harper realizes the terrifying truth.

Damian Romano had not been humiliating her.

He had saved her life.

And the bullet had not been aimed at him.

It had been aimed at her.

“Where is he?” Harper asks.
