Chapter 1 - THE RING I LEFT BESIDE HIS BED
Three days after donating a kidney to her husband of twenty-two years, Sarah Mercer overhears Victor speaking intimately to his mistress, Rita. From behind a hospital curtain, Sarah learns that Victor plans to leave her after recovering and has promised Rita the Boston house Sarah inherited from her parents.
Rather than confront him, Sarah quietly removes her wedding ring and leaves it beside Victor’s hospital bed.
She then calls her attorney, Daniel Reeves, and asks him to check the deed to the Boston property. Sarah already knows the house legally belongs to her alone because her parents bought it before her marriage.
Daniel discovers something much worse.
Eleven days earlier—while Sarah was preparing for transplant surgery—paperwork had been filed involving the property.
The person behind it was Victor.
When Daniel sends the documents to Sarah, she discovers her own signature on them.
A signature she never made.
Victor had not only planned to betray her after accepting her kidney.
