Chapter 1 - THE DOLL ON THE FRONT STEP

Emily Carter had trusted her mother-in-law, Lorraine, to babysit three-year-old Mia while Emily worked a long hospital shift.
Lorraine had never liked Emily.
She criticized the way Emily parented, mocked her written instructions, complained that modern mothers were too protective, and constantly reminded her son Jackson that he had “settled down too fast.”
Still, Emily believed Lorraine loved Mia.
That belief collapsed at 3:18 that afternoon.
When Emily pulled into Lorraine’s driveway, Mia’s favorite rag doll, Rosie, was lying torn apart on the front porch. One arm was twisted. Her little dress was ripped open. Stuffing spilled across the welcome mat.
Mia never went anywhere without Rosie.
Emily knocked.
No answer.
The curtains were closed. Lorraine’s television was silent. Lorraine did not answer her phone. Neither did Jackson’s sister Cassandra.
Jackson told Emily she was probably overreacting.
Emily ignored him and called 911.
Police arrived eight minutes later. After repeated knocking brought no response, the officers forced Lorraine’s front door open.
Emily waited in the yard with Rosie pressed against her chest.
Then one officer returned with a pale expression.
Before Emily could ask what he had discovered, a faint, hoarse voice came from somewhere inside the house.
“Mommy…”

Emily ran toward the doorway.
And everything she believed about her husband’s family began to collapse.
