Chapter 1 - THE WRONG DOOR

Maya Bennett had been working at Adrian Voss’s enormous Lake Forest estate for only eleven days when a burst bathroom pipe turned an ordinary Thursday night into a disaster.

Soaked from head to toe, armed with a mop, missing one shoe, and desperately searching for a supply closet, Maya opened the wrong walnut door and walked directly into one of Adrian’s most private meetings.

Eight dangerous men fell silent.

At the head of the table sat Adrian Voss—the thirty-eight-year-old businessman whose legitimate empire stretched across Chicago, while whispers connected him to a far darker one.

Instead of immediately throwing Maya out, Adrian questioned her about the flood.

Her nervous humor made one of his men nearly laugh.

Then Maya slipped.

A bucket flew.

Adrian caught her around the waist before she hit the floor.

With Maya pressed against his chest and every man in the room staring, Adrian ordered them all to leave.

When the doors finally closed, Maya realized she had broken one of the mansion’s most serious rules.

But Adrian did not fire her.

Instead, still holding her, he looked into her eyes and quietly said:

“You have no idea what meeting you just interrupted.”
