Chapter 1 - THE CALL THAT DESTROYED EVERY LIE

Ninety-three days after Luke Mercer signed divorce papers and deliberately convinced Elena Ross that he no longer loved her, St. Catherine’s Medical Center called him at 10:03 p.m.
Elena had been admitted unconscious.
She was severely dehydrated, dangerously iron deficient, painfully thin—and sixteen weeks pregnant.
Luke immediately knew the baby was his.
He had divorced Elena because anonymous threats, surveillance photographs, and an attempted attack had convinced him that remaining married to a Mercer would eventually get her killed. Instead of telling her the truth, he had chosen cruelty. He made her believe his feelings had died so she would leave him completely.
Now she lay unconscious in Room 347 with bruises around her wrist, no meaningful prenatal care, and one hand resting protectively over the small curve of her stomach.
Dr. Avery Bennett warned Luke that Elena’s condition did not resemble ordinary neglect. Someone might have been controlling her access to food, money, transportation, or medical treatment.
Then Luke received Elena’s purse.
Inside was an envelope with his name written across it.
Beneath his name were three words:
Trust no one.
Seconds later, Marco Reyes—Luke’s longtime driver and head of security—received the first result from an emergency financial trace.
For months, money intended for Elena had been redirected.
The account intercepting it belonged to someone carrying Luke’s family name.
Mercer.

And at that moment, Luke realized the danger had never been outside his family.
It had been standing beside him the entire time.
