Chapter 1 - THE $11,600 LIE
Daniel Devereaux returned unexpectedly to his estate after his accountant flagged an $11,600 payment labeled STAFF ACCESSIBILITY MODIFICATION.
There was only one problem.
Daniel had never approved any accessibility construction.
When he entered the laundry wing, he found four-year-old Ellie, the daughter of his housekeeper Anna, sitting on the floor without the orthopedic brace she needed to stabilize her leg.
The brace lay several feet away.
Standing over her was Mason Locke, the adult son of Daniel's longtime household manager, Vivian Locke.
Mason was forcing Ellie to practice climbing a narrow staircase without the brace because, according to him, it scratched the floors.
Ellie admitted this was not the first time.
When Anna arrived, terrified and furious, she revealed that she had requested a simple temporary mobility ramp months earlier. The medical recommendation estimated it would cost only $186.
Vivian had told Anna that Daniel personally refused the request.
He had not.
Then Daniel called his accountant and discovered that Vivian had approved the mysterious $11,600 accessibility payment to a company called Locke Residential Solutions.
Mason went pale.
Vivian stopped speaking.
Daniel finally understood.
They had denied a disabled four-year-old a $186 ramp, forged his refusal, and then charged him $11,600 for an accessibility modification that had never existed.
