Chapter 4 - THE GIRL WHO SAW EVERYTHING

Matteo Ricci looked at the photograph for almost ten minutes.

Not because he doubted it.

Because he wished he could.

He wished there was another explanation.

A trick of shadows.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake made by someone trying to destroy Marco Duca.

Anything.

Anything except the truth staring back at him.

Marco was standing outside the burning wing of his estate.

The same night Isabella nearly died.

The same night Matteo lost the sound of his daughter's footsteps forever.

The same night Marco had held his shoulders and told him, "I'm sorry, Matteo. There was nothing anyone could do."

Nothing.

That word had followed Matteo for four years.

Doctors said there was nothing they could do.

Therapists said there was nothing they could do.

Specialists from around the world said there was nothing they could do.

But there had always been something.

Someone had known.

Someone had hidden the truth.

And now Matteo finally understood why Isabella had spent years looking at him with an expression he could never explain.

She wasn't angry.

She wasn't disappointed.

She was afraid.

Afraid because she remembered.

Afraid because she knew something terrible had happened.

And afraid because nobody believed her.

The office door opened.

His security chief, Adrian Moretti, stepped inside.

Adrian had worked for Matteo for twelve years.

Unlike most men around him, Adrian didn't flatter him.

Didn't fear him.

Didn't pretend.

That was why Matteo trusted him.

"We confirmed the photo," Adrian said.

Matteo didn't move.

"How?"

"The original investigation files were incomplete. Someone removed pages."

"Someone?"

Adrian hesitated.

Matteo looked at him.

"Say his name."

Adrian swallowed.

"Marco Duca."

The silence that followed was heavier than shouting.

Matteo walked toward the window.

Below him, Manhattan moved as if nothing had changed.

Cars.

People.

Lights.

Millions of strangers living ordinary lives.

And yet his entire world had shifted.

"Find him."

Adrian nodded.

"Tonight?"

Matteo looked back.

"No."

That surprised Adrian.

"You don't want him brought in?"

Matteo's face remained calm.

Too calm.

"Not yet."

Because Matteo Ricci knew something most people didn't.

The truth was more valuable than revenge.

And before Marco Duca fell...

Matteo wanted every piece of the truth.

---

Across town, Lily Carter woke up to the sound of someone knocking.

Not a normal knock.

Three slow knocks.

Pause.

Three more.

Her entire body froze.

Because she knew that pattern.

Someone from the past.

Someone who wasn't supposed to find her.

She slowly walked toward the door.

"Ethan?"

No answer.

Her brother wasn't home.

The knocking came again.

Lily stepped back.

Then her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

DON'T OPEN THE DOOR.

Her heart stopped.

She stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

HE KNOWS YOU TALKED.

Lily's breathing became shallow.

Who?

Matteo?

Marco?

Before she could decide, the door handle moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

Lily backed away.

The old apartment suddenly felt too small.

Too exposed.

Then the door stopped moving.

Footsteps.

Someone leaving.

Lily waited.

One minute.

Two.

Three.

Only then did she run to the window.

The street below was empty.

But on the sidewalk, attached to the building entrance, was a small envelope.

Her name was written on it.

LILY.

With shaking hands, she opened the window and reached down.

Inside was a newspaper clipping.

Four years old.

The headline read:

LOCAL BILLIONAIRE'S DAUGHTER SURVIVES TRAGIC ESTATE FIRE

Lily almost dropped it.

She knew that article.

Everyone knew that article.

But someone had circled one sentence.

A sentence Lily had never seen before.

"Authorities reported no witnesses were present during the incident."

Underneath it, someone had written:

LIAR.

Lily felt cold.

Because she knew exactly who had sent it.

Someone else knew the truth.

---

At noon, Matteo arrived at the Ricci estate.

The same estate where his daughter nearly died.

The same place he had avoided entering alone for years.

The fire damage had been repaired long ago.

New walls.

New floors.

New furniture.

Money could rebuild almost anything.

Almost.

But Matteo knew something.

Buildings remembered.

People did too.

He walked into the old east wing.

The room where Isabella had been found.

Adrian followed behind him.

"We searched everything," Adrian said. "Nothing."

Matteo touched the wall.

"People always think secrets disappear when you hide them."

He looked around.

"They don't."

"Where do you think the secret is?"

Matteo closed his eyes.

Then he remembered.

Isabella's words.

The angel from the fire.

Not "a person."

The angel.

Because to a seven-year-old girl, Lily wasn't just someone who saved her.

She was the person who gave her hope.

Matteo opened his eyes.

"Find every employee who worked here that night."

Adrian nodded.

"And Marco?"

Matteo looked toward the staircase.

"Bring him home."

---

Marco Duca arrived two hours later.

He entered the estate smiling.

Confident.

Relaxed.

Like a man who believed he still controlled the room.

"Matteo."

No response.

Marco noticed the silence.

The missing staff.

The security guards.

The atmosphere.

His smile slowly disappeared.

"What is this?"

Matteo stood near the fireplace.

The same fireplace where he and Marco had celebrated business victories.

The same place where Marco had once promised loyalty.

"Do you remember the night of the fire?"

Marco's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"Of course I remember."

"You told me it was an accident."

"It was."

"No."

Matteo pressed a button on the remote.

The photograph appeared on the television.

Marco standing outside the burning room.

Watching.

Marco stared.

For the first time, the confidence left his face.

"Where did you get that?"

There it was.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Matteo noticed.

"You didn't ask if it was fake."

Silence.

"You asked where I got it."

Marco looked away.

"Matteo, listen to me—"

"No."

His voice was quiet.

And somehow that was worse.

"You listen."

Matteo walked closer.

"My daughter spent four years believing the only person who saved her disappeared."

Marco said nothing.

"You let me believe nobody was there."

Still nothing.

"You watched me destroy myself trying to understand why she stopped walking."

Marco's jaw tightened.

Then he said something Matteo didn't expect.

"I did what I had to do."

The room became freezing cold.

Matteo stared at him.

"What did you say?"

Marco finally looked up.

And the man Matteo had called his brother was gone.

"You think this is about Isabella?"

Matteo's eyes narrowed.

"What else would it be about?"

Marco smiled bitterly.

"Everything."

A long pause.

"You built an empire, Matteo. You think people around you love you because you're powerful?"

Marco stepped closer.

"They fear you."

Matteo didn't react.

Marco continued.

"Your daughter was the only thing that made you human."

"And you tried to take her away."

Marco looked down.

"No."

A strange sadness crossed his face.

"I tried to save myself."

Before Matteo could answer, Marco's phone rang.

Marco looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

Not fear.

Panic.

He answered.

"Hello?"

A voice came through.

Marco listened.

Then slowly looked at Matteo.

"We have a problem."

Matteo said nothing.

Marco lowered the phone.

"Lily Carter knows more than she told you."

Matteo's eyes sharpened.

"What does that mean?"

Marco looked toward the window.

"She didn't just save Isabella that night."

A pause.

"She saw who started the fire."

The room went silent.

Matteo felt his heartbeat slow.

Because suddenly he understood.

Marco wasn't the only person hiding something.

And Lily Carter...

was still protecting someone.

May you like

Someone who was closer than he ever imagined.
