Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT HE THREW ME OUT

My name is Anna Whitmore, and I learned the truth about my marriage on the same night I went into labor.
Months earlier, my grandfather had died and left me a twenty-million-dollar inheritance through a protected family trust. Because the transfer involved sensitive legal and military paperwork, I had been ordered not to discuss it until the process was complete.
Not even with my husband, Mark.
At the same time, Mark knew almost nothing about my real position in the Army. He believed I handled administrative work for the Department of Defense.
In reality, I was a decorated Army colonel preparing to take responsibility for a classified command.
While I was seven months pregnant, Mark began changing.
He stayed out late.
Missed appointments.
Stopped asking about the baby.
And every time I confronted him, he made me feel as though I were the burden.
Then labor started.
I stood in our kitchen shaking through contractions and told him I needed to go to the hospital.
Instead of helping me, Mark threw my hospital bag across the floor.
“I’m done carrying you,” he said. “You’re dead weight.”
Then he ordered me out.
My elderly neighbor, Mrs. Rivera, was the person who drove me to the military medical center while my own husband remained at home.
Mark never called.
The following afternoon, he finally appeared.
But he wasn't alone.
A beautifully dressed woman entered beside him, wearing a sparkling ring.
Mark announced that he had “moved on.”
The woman smiled at me and said, “Looks like you lost.”
Then another person entered.
A three-star Army general.
Every nurse in the room straightened as he approached my bed.
He saluted.
“Colonel Anna Whitmore, Headquarters instructed me to personally deliver your promotion orders and authorization for your new classified command.”
Mark went completely white.
But the worst shock was still coming.
The woman beside him suddenly stood at attention.
“Sir,” she said.
Then she admitted who she really was.
“I’m Colonel Whitmore’s executive officer.”
And in a single second, I realized my husband had not merely betrayed our marriage.

He had been sleeping with a woman inside my own command.
Neither of them understood yet that the affair was only the first secret about to destroy everything they thought they had won.
