Chapter 1 - THE HONEYMOON SHE GAVE AWAY

Matteo Rossi had always believed power could solve almost anything.

He controlled men with fear, problems with money, and enemies with violence. At home, he had developed another habit: hurt his wife, apologize just enough, buy something expensive, and wait for Norah to forgive him.

For years, it had worked.

Then Norah became seven months pregnant.

And exhausted.

At two in the morning, Matteo returned to their fortified Boston home carrying the familiar scent of another woman’s perfume.

Harper’s perfume.

For three months, Norah had noticed it on his shirts.

That night, Matteo’s burner phone lit up on the kitchen island.

Miss you already. Still tasting you.

Norah read the message.

Matteo did not deny it.

He simply told his pregnant wife not to start an argument because he was tired.

Two first-class tickets to Santorini waited nearby. The trip was supposed to be their babymoon and the honeymoon they had never properly taken after their wedding was disrupted three years earlier.

Instead of screaming, Norah pushed the tickets toward him.

“Take her.”

Matteo thought she was bluffing.

When Norah refused to go, he reminded her of everything he provided: the mansion, the security, the money, the protection.

Norah quietly answered that she was not trying to punish him.

She was conceding.

Matteo still did not understand.

He left for Greece with Harper, convinced two weeks apart would teach Norah to appreciate what she had.

Four days later, while Matteo stood beside an infinity pool wondering why his wife had not called, Norah sat inside his private study in Boston.

For six months, she had quietly prepared.

Cash.

A prepaid phone.

Duplicated security tokens.

And knowledge inherited from a father who had once survived the criminal world by understanding that money could reveal truths violence tried to bury.

Norah accessed four of Matteo’s most protected contingency accounts.

She did not empty them.

She took exactly twenty percent.

Enough to disappear.

Enough to protect her unborn child.

Enough to build a life where forgiveness was no longer something Matteo could demand.

One by one, the transfers changed status.

Pending.

Approved.

Norah closed her eyes.

For the first time in years, something inside her loosened.

She thought she had just purchased her freedom.

She had no idea she had also triggered a financial alarm connected to a secret Matteo had been hiding since before their marriage.

And upstairs, inside a locked drawer Norah had never opened before, something belonging to her father was waiting.

May you like

Something she had believed was buried with him eight years earlier.
