Chapter 1 - THE MAN EVERYONE HAD BEEN WAITING FOR

At the annual harvest fair in Veroa, Wisconsin, dairy farmer Megan Turner becomes the target of a public humiliation she refuses to give the satisfaction of answering with anger.

Her former fiancé, Michael Miller, now a successful local supermarket owner, stands only a few feet from Megan’s cheese booth while his wife, Brooke, openly laughs about the fact that Michael once nearly married her.

Brooke mocks Megan’s life on the Turner dairy farm, while Michael dismisses his past relationship with a shrug and says he had been young.

Megan remembers the man Michael used to be—the vulnerable young man who once admired her loyalty to her family, promised to help repair her parents’ farm, and said there was beauty in belonging somewhere.

That admiration disappeared when Michael began pressuring Megan to sell the Turner property.

When she refused, Michael’s love turned to contempt.

But Megan’s deeper concern is not Michael’s cruelty.

For months, anonymous rumors have damaged Turner Dairy. People claim her aging father is confused, that sanitation records are missing, and that inspectors have concerns about the farm.

None of it is true.

Still, restaurants have canceled orders, stores have reduced purchases, and Michael’s own supermarket has completely terminated its contract with Turner Dairy.

Then the mysterious investor everyone in town has been waiting for arrives.

Peter Morgan steps out of a black pickup.

Michael eagerly rushes to greet him because Peter’s planned refrigerated agricultural distribution center could save Michael’s overextended business.

But Peter barely seems to notice Michael.

Instead, he looks across the fairground and freezes.

Twenty-one years earlier, Peter Morgan had been the other man Megan Turner almost built a life with.

And he has never seen her since.

Peter walks straight past Michael and Brooke.

Straight toward Megan.

Their first conversation is tense, wounded, and painfully familiar.

Megan realizes the mysterious investor who has purchased nearly eight hundred acres outside Veroa is the same man who disappeared from her life more than two decades earlier.

When she offers him a bitter congratulations, Peter asks quietly:

May you like

“For what?”

And neither of them realizes that before the day is over, someone is about to make sure Turner Dairy does not survive long enough for Megan to discover why Peter Morgan really came home.
