Chapter 1 - THE PUDDLE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Genevieve Harcourt had only meant to cross the street.

Rain hammered the avenue as she stepped out of a supermarket carrying two paper grocery bags. Before she reached the bus stop, a black SUV rounded the corner.

She recognized it immediately.

Inside sat Alister Beaumont, her ex-husband, beside Celeste Whitcomb—the woman for whom he had ended their eleven-year marriage.

The driver had more than enough room to avoid the enormous puddle beside the curb.

Instead, the SUV accelerated.

Dirty water exploded over Genevieve, soaking her cream coat from head to toe. Her groceries crashed onto the sidewalk. Eggs shattered. Apples rolled into the gutter.

Then the rear window lowered.

Alister smiled.

“Genevieve. I didn’t see you.”

Celeste laughed beside him.

“Looks like divorce really changed your life,” Alister added. “You should have kept the car.”

People nearby stared. One man recorded everything on his phone.

Years earlier, Genevieve might have hidden from the humiliation. She had spent too long smiling politely when Alister mocked her at dinners and dismissed her accomplishments as though everything valuable in their marriage had come from him.

This time, she simply crouched and began gathering her groceries.

A stranger helped her.

Then her phone vibrated.

Callum: Are you done? I can come get you.

Genevieve glanced at the leather glove covering her left hand.

Beneath it was a wedding ring.

Alister did not know Genevieve had remarried four months earlier.

He certainly did not know she had married Callum Whitaker—the only son of the sitting President of the United States.

She answered:

I’m fine. I’ll see you at home.

The SUV disappeared into the rain.

But the humiliation did not disappear with it.

Within hours, the video was online.

By morning, millions had watched billionaire businessman Alister Beaumont deliberately soak his former wife while his mistress laughed.

And seven days later, Genevieve would stand in the same room as Alister again.

Only this time, there would be five hundred witnesses, national television cameras, and some of the most influential people in America watching.

To understand why Alister believed Genevieve was nothing without him, however, one had to go back eleven years.

When Alister met Genevieve, he was ambitious but nearly broke.

She helped rewrite his investor presentations, prepared him for meetings, corrected disastrous communication mistakes, and stood beside him when almost nobody believed Beaumont Atlas would survive.

When investors rejected him, Genevieve encouraged him.

When journalists misunderstood his company, Genevieve taught him how to explain it.

When clients doubted him, she helped create the reputation that made them trust him.

Alister once loved that Genevieve challenged him.

Eventually, he began resenting her for remembering how much help he had needed.

And as Beaumont Atlas grew, the man Genevieve had supported slowly disappeared behind money, power, and applause.

Alister did not know it yet, but losing Genevieve had cost him far more than a marriage.

He had lost the one person who had spent eleven years stopping him from becoming his own worst enemy.
