Chapter 1 - THE SEAT HE CHOSE

Aara Shaw had spent years believing marriage meant standing beside someone when life became difficult.

She had done exactly that for Kalin Shaw.

She had helped him rebuild his construction company when it was struggling, stayed beside him after accidents, reviewed blueprints long after midnight, and ignored the uncomfortable closeness that slowly returned between Kalin and his high-school first love, Isla Mercer.

Kalin always had an explanation.

Isla worked with Juniper Trust.

Isla had a heart condition.

Isla was vulnerable.

Aara was his wife, so she should understand.

Then, during a remote school-renovation project in the South American mountains, a structural collapse trapped Aara beneath a steel beam. Her leg was badly injured, she had broken ribs, and she was losing blood.

A rescue helicopter arrived with only one remaining seat.

Isla had a scraped knee and complained of chest pain, presenting paperwork showing a history of arrhythmia.

The rescue captain gave Kalin ten seconds to decide.

Kalin looked at his bleeding wife.

Then he picked Isla up in his arms.

He carried his first love onto the helicopter.

He promised Aara another aircraft would arrive in ten minutes.

But the weather collapsed.

A landslide blocked the mountain.

And while the helicopter carrying Kalin and Isla disappeared into the clouds, Aara remained pinned beneath the ruins, holding pressure against her own wound and wondering whether the man she had loved for years understood what he had just done.

Ten minutes became twenty.

May you like

Twenty became an hour.

And Kalin Shaw did not come back.
