Chapter 3 - THEY CAME FOR THE BOY

By eight fifteen that morning, Mercer Estate looked less like a home and more like a fortress preparing for war.
Security vehicles blocked both gates.
Armed men moved along the outer grounds.
Ethan’s school had been notified that he would remain home.
Every employee entering the estate was searched.
Claire stood in the kitchen watching strangers with earpieces pass through the hallway.
She was furious.
Not frightened.
Furious.
Adrian found her cutting apples for Ethan.
“We need to talk.”
“You mean now you want to talk?”
His eyes narrowed.
“Claire.”
“For nearly two years, I have walked your son through parks, museums, grocery stores, school entrances, birthday parties, and playgrounds.”
“We always had security nearby.”
“Security I didn’t know was there.”
“That was the point.”
“And now someone photographs me at a hospital, sends that photograph to your house, and suddenly there are men with rifles outside the breakfast room?”
“You’re angry.”
“Yes.”
“At me?”
“Who else?”
Adrian shut the kitchen door.
“Vincent Rourke owns the company holding your medical loan.”
Claire stopped cutting.
“What?”
“Marlowe Financial.”
Her face changed.
“I thought it was just a private lender.”
“It is a front.”
“For what?”
“For Rourke’s money.”
She stared at him.
“I borrowed twenty thousand dollars because Lily’s insurance denied an emergency procedure.”
“I know.”
“You investigated me.”
“I investigated the threat.”
“You investigated me.”
“Yes.”
Claire put down the knife.
“Then you know everything.”
“I know numbers.”
“No. You know what my rent costs. You know my debt. You know what I spend at pharmacies. You probably know exactly how many dollars I had in my checking account yesterday.”
He said nothing.
Her voice shook.
“Do you have any idea how humiliating that is?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“I didn’t ask you to.”
“You should have.”
The words came out harder than he intended.
Claire went still.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You should have asked somebody for help.”
“Who?”
“Me.”
A humorless smile crossed her face.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“The man whose employees are afraid to breathe too loudly in the hallway?”
“I’m not talking about them.”
“The man who barely said ten personal sentences to me in my first year here?”
“I trusted you with my son.”
“And I respected that.”
“You became part of this household.”
“No, Adrian. Ethan became part of my life. There is a difference.”
That landed somewhere he did not expect.
Before he could respond, small footsteps came down the hall.
The kitchen door opened.
Ethan stood there holding his stuffed dinosaur.
“Are you fighting?”
Claire immediately softened.
“No.”
Adrian said at exactly the same time, “Yes.”
Claire shot him a look.
Ethan considered this.
“Who’s winning?”
Despite everything, Claire nearly laughed.
Adrian crouched.
“Nobody.”
“That’s boring.”
“Thank you for your analysis.”
Ethan walked to Claire and held up the dinosaur.
“Mr. Pickles wants pancakes.”
“Mr. Pickles already had pancakes.”
“He’s growing.”
Claire smiled.
“So are you.”
Ethan wrapped his arms around her waist.
Adrian looked away.
That simple movement frightened him more than the photograph.
Because suddenly the threat was not abstract.
Rourke had discovered something Adrian himself had failed to notice.
Claire was not merely an employee.
She was woven into Ethan’s life.
And increasingly, into Adrian’s.
By noon, arrangements had been made to move Lily from Riverview to a private renal unit at St. Catherine’s Medical Center under an alias.
Claire refused.
“No.”
“She isn’t safe.”
“She’s sick. You can’t move her around like a chess piece.”
“The nephrologist approved the transfer.”
“You spoke to her doctor?”
“Mason did.”
“Without me?”
“You’re her emergency contact, not her legal guardian. Lily agreed.”
Claire froze.
“You talked to Lily?”
“She spoke to Mason.”
“And she said yes?”
“Yes.”
Claire grabbed her phone.
Three missed calls from Lily.
She called immediately.
Lily answered on the second ring.
“Before you yell—”
“Lily.”
“I know.”
“You agreed to be moved?”
“A very polite terrifying man named Mason said the new place has better pudding.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Lily.”
“I’m kidding. Mostly.”
“You don’t even know these people.”
“I know you.”
“That doesn’t mean—”
“And I know you haven’t slept.”
Claire fell silent.
Lily’s voice softened.
“Claire, please.”
“I can handle this.”
“That sentence is going to be engraved on your tombstone.”
Across the room, Adrian heard every word.
Lily continued.
“Let someone help for once.”
Claire looked at Adrian.
He was standing near the window, deliberately pretending not to listen.
“I’ll come with you,” Claire said.
“No.”
“Lily—”
“You have Ethan.”
Claire’s eyes closed.
That was the problem.
She had Lily.
She had Ethan.
Two people she loved.
Two people suddenly connected by Adrian Mercer’s dangerous world.
“I’ll see you tonight,” she said.
“You better.”
The transfer took place at two forty.
At three twelve, Mason reported that Lily had arrived safely.
For the first time all day, Claire breathed.
Then Ethan’s teacher called.
His class had a virtual science presentation he had been preparing for all week.
He insisted on participating from home.
Claire took him upstairs.
For almost two hours, normal life returned.
They built a cardboard volcano.
Ethan spilled baking soda everywhere.
Claire laughed when the first eruption covered half the table.
At five fifteen, Adrian entered.
Ethan looked up proudly.
“Dad! It exploded.”
“I can see that.”
“You missed the best one.”
“I’m sure Claire recorded it.”
“She did.”
Adrian’s gaze met hers.
For a second, the tension between them eased.
Then Mason appeared in the doorway.
His face was wrong.
Adrian noticed immediately.
“What?”
Mason looked at Claire, then Ethan.
“Private word.”
Adrian stepped into the hall.
Mason lowered his voice.
“We picked up activity near the east gate.”
“How many?”
“Unknown. One vehicle.”
“Rourke?”
“Possibly.”
Adrian looked through the upstairs window toward the tree line.
“Lock down the interior.”
“What’s happening?” Claire asked behind him.
Adrian turned.
“Stay with Ethan.”
“That is not an answer.”
A sharp crack sounded outside.
Then another.
Claire’s face drained.
Ethan looked up.
“Was that thunder?”
Adrian moved fast.
He grabbed Ethan, lifted him into his arms, and shoved Claire toward the reinforced safe room at the end of the hallway.
“Inside.”
“What’s happening?”
“Inside!”
The estate alarm began screaming.
Red lights flashed.
Claire stumbled into the safe room with Ethan.
Adrian handed his son to her.
“Do not open this door for anyone except me or Mason.”
“Dad?”
Ethan’s voice cracked.
Adrian knelt and took his face in both hands.
“Hey. Look at me.”
Ethan did.
“You remember the drill?”
The boy nodded.
“You stay with Claire.”
“Are bad people here?”
Adrian’s expression did not change.
“No one is getting near you.”
He stood.
Claire grabbed his sleeve.
“Adrian.”
Their eyes met.
For the first time, hers held unmistakable fear.
“Come back.”
Something passed across his face.
Then he closed the reinforced door.
The next six minutes felt like six hours.
Claire sat on the floor with Ethan pressed against her chest.
The alarm continued.
Distant shouting echoed through the walls.
Then silence.
Ethan whispered, “Claire?”
“I’m here.”
“Are you scared?”
She swallowed.
“A little.”
“Me too.”
“That’s okay.”
“You said brave means scared but doing the thing anyway.”
Her throat tightened.
“Exactly.”
A buzzer sounded.
Someone entered the security code outside.
Claire stood.
“Who is it?”
“Mason.”
She did not move.
Adrian had said Adrian or Mason.
Still, something felt wrong.
“Claire,” Mason called. “We need to move Ethan.”
“Where’s Adrian?”
“East grounds.”
“Tell him to come here.”
“No time.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
Then at the door.
Mason spoke again.
“Claire, Rourke’s men breached the outer perimeter. We have a vehicle waiting beneath the house.”
She hesitated.
Then her phone vibrated.
A text.
From Adrian.
DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR.
Claire’s blood went cold.
Outside, Mason—or whoever was using his voice—entered another code.
The lock clicked once.
Ethan grabbed her hand.
Claire backed away.
“Mason?”
No answer.
A final electronic beep sounded.
The heavy door began to open.
Claire shoved Ethan behind her.
A masked man appeared in the gap.
She did not think.
She grabbed the metal fire extinguisher mounted beside the wall and swung with both hands.
It connected with his face.
The man dropped.
Claire slammed the panic button.
Another man reached through the doorway.
She struck his arm.
He cursed.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Then Adrian appeared.
He hit the second intruder with enough force to send him into the wall.
Within seconds, Mercer security flooded the corridor.
Claire dropped the extinguisher.
Her entire body began shaking.
Ethan ran to his father.
Adrian caught him.
Then his eyes moved to Claire.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
He crossed the space between them and pulled her against him.
It lasted perhaps two seconds.
Maybe three.
Long enough for Claire to feel how hard his heart was beating.
Long enough for Adrian to realize he had almost lost both of them.
Then he released her.
“How did they get the safe-room code?” she whispered.
Adrian looked toward the unconscious intruder.
“That’s what I’m going to find out.”
Mason came running from the stairwell.
Blood streaked one side of his forehead.
“I was at the east gate.”
Adrian’s gaze sharpened.
“Someone used your voice.”
Mason went still.
“What?”
“A recording,” Claire said.
Adrian looked at the men surrounding them.
The house employed only fourteen people who knew the emergency procedures.
Only six knew the safe-room system.
Only three knew enough about Mason to imitate his phrasing.
This was not merely Rourke attacking from outside.
Someone inside had opened the door.
Adrian’s phone rang.
St. Catherine’s Medical Center.
Claire’s stomach dropped.
He answered.
“Mercer.”
A woman spoke rapidly.
Adrian’s face changed.
Claire stepped closer.
“What is it?”
He looked at her.
And for the first time that day, fear broke through his control.
“Lily’s room is empty.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“What?”
“They found a nurse unconscious in the service corridor.”
“No.”
“Claire—”
“No.”
“She was moved in a hospital transport chair twenty-three minutes ago.”
Claire grabbed Adrian’s arm.
“Where is my sister?”
His phone vibrated with an incoming message.
A photograph appeared.
Lily.
Unconscious.
Strapped to a chair.
