Chapter 1 - THE GIRL BENEATH THE BLUE LIGHTS
Three years after the death of his five-year-old daughter Juniper, billionaire Gideon Vale has become a man who can buy nearly anything except a reason to celebrate Christmas.
On the night of his annual holiday gala, he abandons the event and drives aimlessly through a snow-covered Chicago. Beneath cheap blue Christmas lights in a deserted park, he finds a seven-year-old girl curled on a bench, clutching a battered stuffed rabbit.
Her mother has told her to wait there.
Gideon brings the freezing child into his car, believing she has simply been abandoned by a desperate parent.
Then the girl suddenly sees a black SUV across the street.
“The man who made Mama fall,” she whispers.
The SUV begins moving toward them.
Gideon orders his driver to flee.
Later, his security chief Daniel Reed discovers that the girl's mother has been admitted unconscious to St. Anthony's Hospital with a concussion and signs of dehydration. Even more disturbing, an unidentified man has already contacted police asking about the missing seven-year-old.
As the child sleeps against Gideon's arm, Gideon realizes that no one has misplaced her.
