Chapter 5 - THE BRIDE WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

By morning, Nico Moretti was on every major news channel in America.

Photographs of his hotels, shipping companies, restaurants, and real-estate holdings filled television screens beside words like racketeering, organized crime, federal investigation, conspiracy, and murder.

None of those words frightened him.

What frightened him was timing.

The federal leak had happened less than three hours after the attack on Anna.

That was not coincidence.

It was leverage.

At 7:12 a.m., Nico stood beside Anna’s hospital window while Luca spoke quietly through a secure phone.

“The documents are real.”

Nico turned.

“All of them?”

“Some.”

“And the rest?”

“Fabricated.”

Anna watched them from bed.

Luca continued.

“They mixed legitimate financial records with altered transactions and evidence connected to crimes we had nothing to do with.”

“Can our lawyers prove it?”

“Eventually.”

“Eventually isn’t good enough.”

“No.”

Nico rubbed his jaw.

“What about my office?”

“Access log says Serena entered at 11:43 Tuesday night.”

Anna looked up.

Nico said nothing.

Luca continued.

“She stayed fourteen minutes.”

“Why?”

“Don’t know.”

“And Marco?”

“No logged entry.”

“He doesn’t need one if he cloned credentials.”

“Possible.”

Nico looked at Anna.

She understood immediately.

“You think Serena leaked the documents.”

“I think someone used my office.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No.”

Anna studied him.

“You want it to be Marco.”

Nico’s expression hardened.

“I want facts.”

“You want Serena innocent because then you only betrayed me for someone who was manipulated too.”

That hit harder than she intended.

Nico looked away.

Anna regretted it immediately.

“This isn’t about what happened between us,” he said.

“Yes, it is.”

He turned back.

“Everything happening right now is about what happened between us.”

Her voice softened.

“Someone broke us apart because together we threatened whatever plan they had for you.”

Nico stared at her.

For years, he had treated emotional attachment as vulnerability.

Now he was beginning to understand that someone else had treated his love for Anna as a strategic obstacle.

The door opened.

Two federal agents entered.

Nico’s security moved immediately.

The older agent raised both hands.

“Easy. We’re not here to arrest anyone.”

“Then you’re already having a better morning than I expected.”

The agent ignored the remark.

“Nicholas Moretti?”

“You know who I am.”

“Agent Michael Reyes. FBI Organized Crime Division.”

Nico’s jaw tightened.

“What do you want?”

Reyes looked toward Anna.

“To tell you someone inside the Bellini organization has been communicating with federal investigators for six months.”

Serena.

The thought landed instantly.

Nico gave nothing away.

“Who?”

“I can’t disclose that.”

“Then leave.”

Reyes did not move.

“The source claims Vittorio Bellini and Marco Santoro have been coordinating financial transfers through Moretti companies without your knowledge.”

Nico felt something settle into place.

“And the homicide evidence?”

“Some of it points to Bellini.”

“Some?”

Reyes studied him.

“The bombing that killed your parents is in those files.”

The room went silent.

Nico’s face changed.

“My parents’ murder happened twenty years ago.”

“Yes.”

“And you expect me to believe somebody kept records?”

“Not records.”

Reyes reached into his coat slowly and removed a photograph sealed in plastic.

He handed it to Nico.

The image was grainy.

A parking garage.

A younger Marco Santoro.

A younger Vittorio Bellini.

And between them, a man Nico recognized as the mechanic blamed for placing the explosive beneath his parents’ car.

The photograph had been taken four days before the bombing.

Anna whispered, “Nico.”

He could not speak.

Reyes continued.

“We believe your father was planning to dissolve several criminal partnerships and move the Moretti businesses toward legitimate operations. Bellini stood to lose millions. Santoro stood to lose power.”

Nico stared at the photograph.

Marco had raised him.

Taught him to shoot.

Taught him to negotiate.

Sat beside him at his mother’s funeral.

Held his shoulder while his father’s coffin was lowered into the ground.

“You’re saying Marco killed them.”

“I’m saying the evidence suggests he helped.”

Nico’s hand closed around the photograph.

Reyes lowered his voice.

“And we think the same people separated you from Ms. Bennett because your relationship was pushing you in the same direction as your father.”

Anna looked at Nico.

It was true.

Before their breakup, she had begged him to sell the illegal portions of his empire.

Nico had resisted.

But he had begun quietly moving assets.

Closing routes.

Cutting ties.

Planning a life that looked increasingly unlike Marco’s.

Then Anna was gone.

Within months, Nico abandoned those plans.

Reyes glanced at his watch.

“We’ll speak again.”

“You came here just to show me this?”

“No.”

He looked at Anna.

“We also came because someone is trying to kill your witness.”

“What witness?”

The door opened again.

Serena walked in.

Nico stared.

Her hair was pulled into a rough ponytail. She wore jeans, sneakers, and a coat that looked borrowed.

No diamonds.

No engagement ring.

Agent Reyes stepped aside.

Serena met Nico’s eyes.

“I’m the source.”

Silence.

Nico did not react for several seconds.

Then he crossed the room.

“You leaked those files?”

“Yes.”

“You turned over my company records?”

“Yes.”

“The forged ones too?”

“No.”

“Someone did.”

“I know.”

“You were in my office Tuesday.”

“Yes.”

Anna watched them carefully.

Serena’s eyes filled.

“I needed access to a safe my father told me existed behind your bookshelf.”

Nico’s expression sharpened.

“There is no safe.”

“There is.”

He stared.

“I found it.”

Luca immediately called someone.

Serena continued.

“My father used your office years ago when Marco still had administrative access. They installed a compartment you didn’t know about.”

“What was inside?”

“A ledger.”

Nico’s face changed.

His father’s will.

Marco’s phone call.

Ask yourself why you never saw the original.

Serena reached inside her coat.

She removed a small flash drive.

“I copied everything before I gave the ledger to the FBI.”

Nico held out his hand.

She did not give it to him.

“Why?”

“Because there’s something you need to understand first.”

“What?”

“My father never wanted me to marry you because of peace.”

Serena looked at Anna.

“He wanted a legal claim inside the Moretti family.”

Anna’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.

Nico understood.

“Through an heir.”

“Yes.”

“You.”

“Yes.”

“But now Anna is carrying one.”

Serena nodded.

“And that changes everything.”

Nico’s blood chilled.

Serena finally handed him the drive.

“Your father’s original will says that if a direct Moretti heir exists, controlling ownership of the legitimate companies transfers into a protected family trust.”

Anna frowned.

“When?”

Serena looked at her.

“Upon the birth of Nico’s first child.”

The room became very quiet.

Nico looked down at Anna’s belly.

His son was not merely a child Marco had wanted hidden.

He was a legal trigger.

An heir who would strip Marco and Bellini of control over billions in assets they had quietly been using for years.

Anna whispered, “That’s why they wanted me taken to Switzerland.”

Serena nodded.

“Maybe.”

Nico looked at her sharply.

“What do you mean maybe?”

Serena went pale.

“There’s another clause.”

“What clause?”

“If the mother is deemed legally incapable, missing, or dead before the heir is born, emergency control of the trust remains with the appointed family custodian.”

Nico already knew.

“Marco.”

Serena shook her head.

“No.”

Nico stared at her.

“Who?”

Serena’s voice barely emerged.

“Vittorio Bellini.”

Anna’s heartbeat monitor accelerated.

Nico stepped back.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The forced alliance.

The threats.

The kidnapping plan.

The attack.

The forged evidence.

Bellini did not need Nico married.

He needed access to Moretti assets.

Serena had merely been the cleanest route.

Anna’s baby had created another.

A more dangerous one.

Luca’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face drained.

“Nico.”

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

“What happened?”

“The hospital’s east entrance lost camera feed thirty seconds ago.”

Nico drew his weapon.

Security men moved into position.

Then the lights in the room flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Serena backed toward Anna’s bed.

Nico looked through the glass wall into the corridor.

Two nurses ran past.

Then smoke began curling beneath a door at the far end.

Fire alarm.

People started shouting.

Luca swore.

“Diversion.”

Nico turned toward Anna.

“Get her out.”

Before anyone could move, the window behind Anna exploded inward.

Glass filled the room.

A black-clad figure came through on a suspended line.

Nico fired.

The figure dropped behind the bed.

Another line appeared.

Then another.

Luca dragged Serena down.

Nico lunged for Anna.

May you like

But a gloved hand had already closed around her arm.

And through the shattered window, high above Manhattan, a helicopter descended toward the hospital roof.
