Chapter 2 - The Click Behind My Head

Before the shock of Claire's words could fully settle, the icy steel barrel of a weapon pressed against the base of my neck. The distinct, ominous click of a hammer being pulled back echoed through the tiled kitchen.
"Don't make a single movement, Boss," a familiar voice rumbled low behind me. Marcus. The chief of my personal security detail, a man who had stood at my right hand for eight long years, was holding the gun. He was the only person with master clearance override codes to bypass the mansion's perimeter defenses without triggering silent alarms.
"Marcus," I said, keeping my tone dead and steady, though fury raged inside my chest like a furnace. "You sold out the Miami sit-down, didn't you?"
"It was just business, Mr. Vale," Marcus spat, his voice devoid of remorse. "Victor paid double what you offered. He wanted the whole Vale syndicate wiped clean tonight. Your daughters were just insurance so you wouldn't come back seeking vengeance."
Ava gasped from the counter, but Claire didn't flinch. Her eyes remained cold, calculating, and fixed on Marcus's shadow on the wall. In a fraction of a second, before Marcus could pull his trigger, Claire flicked her wrist. The heavy stainless-steel surgical forceps—still holding the bloody bullet—flew through the air like a thrown dagger. The sharp metal tip impaled Marcus directly in the soft tissue of his left eye.
Marcus shrieked in agonizing pain, his head jerking back as his weapon discharged wildly into the plaster ceiling. Taking immediate advantage of the distraction, I spun around, grabbed Marcus’s wrist, twisted his arm until the joint snapped, and slammed him onto the blood-slick marble floor. Before he could recover, I drew my weapon and put a round cleanly through his head.

Silence fell over the room once more, broken only by the heavy breathing of my terrified children. Claire calmly reached for a fresh pair of surgical gloves from her apron pocket, stepping over Marcus's body without giving it a second glance. "Please try not to stain the floor any further, Mr. Vale," she remarked softly. "I spent three hours waxing this tile this afternoon."
