Chapter 11 - BEYOND THE SHADOWS

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was illuminated by thousand-crystal chandeliers, filled with five hundred of the most influential political leaders, corporate titans, and international diplomats in the country.

The annual Cross Maritime Gala was the social event of the decade, celebrating the formal opening of the newly expanded transatlantic deep-water port terminal.

The double doors at the top of the grand marble staircase swung open.

A hush fell over the magnificent ballroom.

Gabriel Cross walked down the staircase without a cane, his stride powerful, graceful, and commanding. He wore a custom midnight-black tuxedo, his broad frame radiating absolute authority, health, and vitality.

On his arm, wearing a breathtaking emerald-silk backless gown adorned with diamonds that sparkled under the grand lights, walked Maya Vance Cross—the executive vice-president of the Cross Charitable Foundation and the undisputed queen of Gabriel’s heart and empire.

Applause cascaded through the ballroom like thunder as we descended the steps together.

Landon Mercer stood at the base of the staircase, a crystal champagne glass in his hand, smiling with genuine, profound happiness.

"You look decent, Gabriel," Landon teased as we reached the floor. "Much better than when you were throwing crystal glasses at my housekeeping staff."

"Do not remind my wife of her humble beginnings," Gabriel replied with a dry, affectionate smirk, pulling me closer against his side. "She still charges me hazard pay whenever I lose my temper."

"And I collect in cash," I whispered, laughing softly as Gabriel pressed a tender kiss against my temple in full view of the entire New York high society.

Later that evening, we stepped out onto the private penthouse terrace overlooking the illuminated skyline of Central Park. The crisp autumn air was clean and sweet, the distant hum of the city humming far below us.

Gabriel stood behind me, his arms wrapped securely around my waist, his chin resting gently on the top of my head as we looked out over the glittering city lights.

"Seventeen caregivers ran away from that house," Gabriel murmured into my hair, his voice filled with a deep, endless warmth.

"They were smart," I teased gently, turning in his arms to look up into the handsome face of the man I loved beyond measure.

"They were cowards," Gabriel corrected, smiling down at me with absolute adoration. "Only one woman had the courage to look into the dark, see the broken beast inside, and pull him back into the light."

"I didn't do it alone," I whispered, resting my hand over his steady, beating heart. "You fought your way back to me."

"And I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to fight again," Gabriel promised.

He lowered his head, sealing his vow beneath the starry New York sky with a kiss full of peace, passion, and an unbreakable love that had triumphed over every shadow.
