Chapter 2 - The Gun at the Counter

The screech of high-performance tires tore through the icy gale outside Miller’s Corner. Headlights blinded the diner’s grease-stained windows, casting violent, elongated shadows across the linoleum floor. Emily Parker pressed her back against the kitchen counter, her lungs burning with cold air. Beneath the far booth, Lily and Grace lay motionless, hidden behind heavy burgundy vinyl.

The diner’s front glass door shattered under the impact of heavy tactical boots.

Three men entered in synchronized silence, clad in tailored charcoal wool coats over Kevlar vests. They moved like trained apex predators, assault weapons raised and sweeping every corner. But the man who stepped through the doorway behind them did not need a rifle to command terror.

Dominic Vale walked into the diner like a king surveying a burning ruin.

His bespoke black cashmere coat billowed with the sub-zero draft. Silver dusted his temples, contrasting with the dark, lethal intensity in his eyes. He held a customized SIG Sauer pistol in his right hand, finger resting flat along the trigger guard. His gaze locked onto Emily, who stood frozen beside the stainless-steel prep table.

“Where are they?” His voice was low, gravelly, and vibrating with a lethal cadence that made the glass mugs on the counter rattle.

Emily tried to speak, but her throat had turned to sandpaper. The sheer presence of the billionaire shipping magnate—the man whispered about in backroom docks as Chicago’s undisputed underworld monarch—felt heavy enough to crush the air from her chest.

“I asked you a question,” Dominic murmured, closing the distance between them in three long, predatory strides. The muzzle of his weapon rose, pointing dead center between Emily’s eyes. “If you took them, if you laid a single hand on them, dying here will be the easiest part of your night.”

Emily sank slowly onto her knees, hands raised, refusing to drop her eyes. “They’re safe. I gave them food. They were freezing behind the trash—”

A soft rustle interrupted her.

From beneath the corner booth, a tiny, blanket-swathed figure crawled onto the linoleum. Grace, her cheeks still flushed with fever, pulled herself up by the edge of the laminate table. Her chattering teeth barely formed the words, but her scream pierced the silence.

“Daddy! Don’t hurt her! She saved us!”

Dominic froze.

For a fraction of a second, the terrifying mask of Chicago’s most ruthless crime lord cracked. The gun in his hand lowered instantly. His eyes, dark and merciless seconds before, widened with pure, undisguised agony and relief.

“Grace?” Dominic whispered.

Lily crawled out right behind her twin, throwing her small arms around Emily’s waist before pointing an accusatory finger at her father’s guards. “Emily gave us soup! The bad men were chasing us, and Mr. Reed let them into our car! Emily hid us from the wolf!”

Dominic dropped to one knee, wrapping his massive arms around both girls, burying his face in their tangled, damp blond hair. His broad shoulders heaved once with a silent, shuddering breath. When he lifted his head, his gaze returned to Emily. The murderous rage had vanished, replaced by a calculating, piercing scrutiny.

“Reed,” Dominic said quietly into the radio pinned to his collar. “Find him. Bring him to the docks alive.”

“Boss,” one of the tactical guards near the front window warned, raising his thermal scope. “Multiple black Suburbans turning onto 31st Street. Volkov’s crew. They tracked the girls’ tracker beacon before we scrambled it.”

Dominic stood up, scooping Grace into his left arm while Lily clung tightly to Emily’s hand.

“Daddy, Emily has to come!” Lily sobbed, pulling Emily toward the door. “The wolf will eat her!”

Dominic stared at Emily’s thin coat, her nametag pinned crookedly over her faded uniform, and the absolute defiance in her eyes.

“Get her into the armored Maybach,” Dominic commanded.

“Wait!” Emily pulled back, her heart racing. “I have a shift! My apartment—I can’t just leave—”

A high-caliber sniper round suddenly shattered the neon diner sign above their heads, showering the floor with sparks and pulverized glass. Dominic threw his right arm around Emily, shoving her downward as a hail of automatic gunfire shredded the diner’s exterior.
