Chapter 6 - THE TAPE OF 2008

Adrian walked over to an antique oak cabinet resting against the far wall of the master suite. He slid open a carved drawer, revealing an old-fashioned reel-to-reel magnetic tape deck, modified to accept standard micro-cassettes.
Lena stood frozen in the center of the room, her eyes fixed on the plastic casing in his hand. Her heart thudded in her ears like a tribal drum. Everything she thought she knew about her abandoned childhood, about the mother who had vanished into thin air, was trapped inside that tiny spool of magnetic tape.
"Your mother wasn't just a governess," Adrian said as he inserted the cassette into the deck. "She was an investigative journalist working deep undercover for the Department of Justice. Her real name was Julianna Carter, but she entered this house under an alias to expose the syndicate's human trafficking networks."
Lena’s breath caught. "An undercover agent?"
"She was brilliant," Adrian continued, his voice softening with genuine admiration. "She spent four years inside this house gathering financial records, transaction logs, and witness statements. But she made one fatal mistake: she fell in love with this family. She loved Julian and me as if we were her own sons. And when my father discovered what she was doing... he didn't just kill her. He wanted to destroy her soul first."
Adrian hit Play.
A sharp hiss of static filled the room, followed by the muffled scraping of a microphone being dragged across concrete. Then came the sound of heavy breathing—raspy, wet, and labored.
"This is Marco Blackwood," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the speakers, dripping with arrogance and cruelty. "The date is October 14, 2008. If this recording is being played, it means the federal vultures are circling, and my sons have proven to be as soft-hearted as their pathetic mother."
Lena shivered. The voice sounded horrifyingly familiar, carrying the same aristocratic timber as Adrian's, but corrupted by pure sadism.
"Julianna thinks she has outsmarted me," the recording continued, accompanied by the faint, muffled sound of a woman sobbing in the background. "She thinks her hidden ledger will tear down my empire. She doesn't realize that I knew who she was the moment she stepped over my threshold. I let her play her little game. I let her give birth to Helena. Because an heir with federal blood and Blackwood blood is the ultimate leverage."
"Let her go, Marco!" A younger, furious voice suddenly screamed on the tape—Adrian’s voice from fourteen years ago. "She has nothing to do with this! Take me instead!"
"You are weak, Adrian!" the elder Blackwood roared back. "You care about things that can be bled! Julianna knows everything. She knows where the bodies are buried, she knows where the money is hidden, and she thinks the law will save her. But out here, in the dark, there is only one law: the strong survive, and the weak are erased!"
A loud scuffle erupted on the tape. The sound of a woman crying out: "Lena! Look at the locket, baby! Remember what Mommy told you—"
CRACK.
A gunshot cut through the recording like lightning.
A heavy thud followed. Then, the frantic, agonized screaming of a young man. Another gunshot exploded, followed by a wet gasp and the sound of a body collapsing onto concrete.
Silence descended on the tape, broken only by the ragged sobbing of twenty-year-old Adrian Blackwood.
"Adrian..." the younger Julian's voice whispered through the static, trembling with terror. "What did you do? What did you do to Father?"
"He was going to kill her, Julian," the young Adrian choked out between sobs. "He was going to kill the baby next."
"We have to run! The guards are coming!"
"No," young Adrian’s voice suddenly hardened on the tape, the boy dying in that instant and the mafia boss taking his place. "We don't run. We bury them both in the cellar. We tell the Council that Father died in an offshore explosion, and we send the baby where no one will ever find her. We take the throne, Julian. And God forgive us for what we have to become."
The tape ended with a sharp click of the auto-stop mechanism.
Lena stood completely motionless. Tears were streaming down her face, falling silently onto the front of her uniform. The truth hung in the air between them, heavy and suffocating.
Adrian hadn't murdered her mother. He had tried to save her. He had taken his own father's life to protect an eight-year-old girl he barely knew.
"My mother..." Lena choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "Her last words... she said to look at the locket."
Adrian stepped forward, his eyes clouded with sorrow. He took the bloody silver locket from the wooden box on the bed and held it out to her on his open palm. "I've carried this for fourteen years. I had the clasp examined by forensic experts, jewelers, locksmiths. None of them could find anything inside. It’s solid sterling silver."
Lena stepped closer, her hands trembling as she reached out. She didn't take Adrian's locket; instead, she pulled the identical locket from her own apron pocket—the one her mother had left around her neck when she was placed in foster care.
She held the two lockets side by side.
They were identical in every way—except for one detail.
"They're not two separate lockets," Lena breathed, her eyes widening as an old childhood memory suddenly clicked into place. "Mommy told me a bedtime story about two halves of a compass that had to find each other across the sea."
With trembling fingers, Lena turned both lockets over. On the back of each piece was a tiny, recessed groove along the outer rim. She aligned the edges of the two silver pendants and pressed them together.
CLICK.
A hidden internal spring released with a sharp metallic snap. The solid backing of Adrian’s locket popped open, revealing an ultra-thin micro-SD card coated in protective resin, nestled invisibly beneath the silver casing.
Adrian’s breath hitched. "The ledger."
Before either of them could move, the mansion's blaring red emergency alarms shrieked to life.
The high-pitched wail echoed through every corridor, shaking the walls. Red strobes flashed across the ceiling of the master suite.

Adrian’s radio clipped to his belt crackled frantically with static. Mikhail’s panicked voice tore through the speaker:
"Boss! We've got multiple breaches at the north and south gates! Black SUVs, heavily armed—it’s the Valenti syndicate! They’ve cut the perimeter power! They’re inside the grounds!"
