Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW OVER THE DOCKS

The legal destruction of the Vance family was nearly complete, but in the world of high-stakes power, a dying beast always lashes out with its most venomous strike.
Three days after Isaac was formally indicted without bail, Leo and Noah summoned me to the command center of Sterling Logistics, located overlooking the massive container terminal at the Port of Newark. The walls of the room were lined with surveillance feeds, satellite tracking maps, and real-time manifests of cargo vessels navigating international waters.
Noah stood over a large tactical map spread across the center island, his expression darker than usual. Next to him, Julian was typing rapidly on an encrypted workstation.
“What’s happening?” I asked, stepping into the room. My back was healing well, thanks to the Sterling medical team, but the tension in the room made my muscles tighten instinctively.
“Arthur Vance had a contingency plan,” Noah said bluntly. “Before his accounts were frozen, he authorized an emergency transfer of twenty million dollars through an untraceable cryptocurrency escrow. The contract went out to a private mercenary outfit operating out of Eastern Europe—men who specialize in witness elimination and extrajudicial sabotage.”
“Arthur is trying to silence the witnesses before the grand jury convenes on Friday,” Julian added, looking up from his screen. “Specifically, he’s targeting Marcus, who holds the primary cryptographic keys to the Vance financial ledger... and you, Flora.”
I felt a chill run down my arms, but I didn't back down. “Where are they?”
“They’re already here,” Leo said, pointing at a red blinking marker on the digital map. “They smuggled themselves into the Port of New York aboard a container vessel flying a Panamanian flag—a vessel that was technically chartered by an offshore subsidiary of Vance Infrastructure.”
“Why didn't customs intercept them?” I asked.
“Because Gregory Ross—Clover’s father—still had two corrupt port inspectors on his payroll who cleared the container without a physical inspection before Ross was detained,” Caleb explained, stepping out from the shadows near the balcony. He was cleaning the slide of a customized tactical pistol with practiced ease. “Twelve men. Ex-military. Heavily armed, completely off the grid, and with nothing to lose. Arthur promised them the twenty million upon confirmation of your death.”
I looked at Noah. “What do we do?”
Noah’s eyes gleamed with the ruthless authority that had made the Sterling name feared across two continents. “We don't wait for them to come to our home, Flora. In our family, when someone draws a weapon on a Sterling, we bury them before they can find the trigger.”
“We’ve already tracked their safehouse,” Caleb continued, pulling up a satellite feed on the main wall monitor. The image zoomed in on an abandoned industrial warehouse located in the desolate marshlands of the Meadowlands, just across the river. “They think they’re preparing an ambush for your convoy when you travel to the federal courthouse tomorrow morning. They don’t know that Marcus tapped into their encrypted radio frequencies three hours ago.”
“We’re going to end this tonight,” Leo stated, racking the bolt of a heavy combat shotgun. “Once this mercenary cell is dismantled, Arthur Vance will have exhausted every single resource he possesses. He will have no money, no allies, and no weapons left to wield.”
“I’m coming with you,” I said immediately.
Noah looked at me, his brow furrowing. “Flora, this isn't a courtroom. It’s a wet-work operation.”
“I spent three years being a victim in Isaac Vance’s house,” I replied, stepping directly in front of Noah, holding his gaze without blinking. “I am done hiding behind closed doors while my brothers fight my battles. Arthur Vance ordered my execution because he thinks I’m still the weak, defenseless girl he can bully into silence. I want to be there when his last hope turns to ash.”

Noah stared at me for several long seconds. He saw the cold, unshakable determination in my eyes—the exact same spirit that lived in his own chest. Slowly, a nod of deep, fraternal respect broke across his hardened face.
“Leo,” Noah commanded quietly. “Get her a vest.”
