Chapter 5 - The Ambush

The cold wind whipped through the circular driveway, carrying the scent of pine and fresh exhaust. Karen stood by the door of the luxury SUV, her lips painted a severe, crimson red that looked like a fresh wound against her pale skin. Her eyes, usually masked with practiced charm at family holidays, were glittering with a manic, triumphant energy.

Beside her stood Marcus Sterling. Even if I hadn’t recognized his face from legal billboards across the county, his reputation preceded him. Sterling was the kind of high-priced probate vulture who specialized in tearing apart ironclad wills for greedy heirs, using scorched-earth tactics to force quiet, out-of-court settlements.

"Step away from the door, Mr. and Mrs. Harper," Sterling announced, his voice smooth, resonant, and entirely devoid of human empathy. He pulled a sleek smartphone from his breast pocket, tilting the camera toward us. "You are trespassing on private property, and you are currently harassing an elderly witness in an active juvenile dependency proceeding. Everything you say is being recorded for the court."

David didn't step back. The rage that had been simmering inside him for twenty-four hours threatened to boil over. He took two long strides down the stone steps, his fists clenched at his sides. "Karen, what the hell is this? What lies did you feed this woman to make her sign that fraudulent piece of garbage?"

"Don't flatter yourself, little brother," Karen spat, her sneer tightening into something ugly and venomous. "You always thought you were Dad's golden boy. You and your perfect little family, living in your suburban bubble while I was left to rot with scraps. You think Dad left that sixty percent to Oliver out of love? He left it out of guilt."

"Shut your mouth!" I yelled, coming down the steps to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with David. My heart was hammering, but I refused to let this parasite see me flinch. "You brought the state to my door. You had a stranger stick a swab in my baby's mouth! You made Oliver cry, you sick, pathetic monster!"

"Your baby?" Karen laughed, a dry, grating cackle that echoed off the columns of the estate. "Keep telling yourself that, Vanessa. Let’s see how bold you are on Friday when the DNA results come back from the state lab."

Something in the way she said when the results come back sent a sickening jolt through my spine. It wasn't the bravado of a desperate gambler bluffing with a bad hand; it was the chilling confidence of someone who already knew the score before the game had even started.

"What did you do?" David whispered, the horrible realization dawning on him. "The lab. What did you do to the samples, Karen?"

Sterling stepped between David and Karen, raising a manicured hand. "Mr. Harper, I strongly advise you to watch your slanderous accusations. My client has done nothing but bring forward critical irregularities regarding the legal lineage of the supposed beneficiary of the Charles Harper Family Trust. If you continue to threaten my client or Dr. Cross, I will have Detective Miller return to your residence with an immediate arrest warrant."

Behind us, the heavy oak door of the estate clicked. We turned just in time to see Dr. Evelyn Cross slipping back inside, her face pale as parchment, the door locking securely behind her. The woman had vanished like a phantom, leaving her cryptic words hanging in the icy air: Your father didn't set up that trust to protect your son... He set it up to hide what happened.

"We're done here," Sterling said, gesturing for Karen to get back into the SUV. "I suggest you spend your remaining hours preparing your son for transition care. Judge Hastings doesn't look kindly on falsified custody, Mrs. Harper. When the state annex files its report tomorrow afternoon, your little fantasy is over."

"Karen!" David roared, lunging forward, but I caught him by the sleeve of his coat, digging my fingernails into the wool with all my strength.

"David, stop! Look at him—he’s recording! That's what they want!" I begged, my voice breaking. "Don't give them an excuse to lock you up. Oliver needs you! I need you!"

David stopped, his entire frame shaking with violent tremors of fury. He stared through the tinted window of the SUV as Karen buckled her seatbelt, offering us a mocking little wave with her manicured fingers before Sterling gunned the engine. The luxury vehicle spun around the gravel circle, spraying tiny gray stones against our tires, and tore through the iron gates out onto the main road.

Silence crashed back over the estate, broken only by the rapid, shallow sound of our breathing.

"She touched the lab," David said, his voice hollow, dead. "She did something to the chain of custody, Vanessa. If the state annex comes back with a negative match, they’re going to take him on Friday. They're going to put Oliver in a state home."

"No," I said, my voice hardening until it felt like forged steel. The fear was gone, burned away by the white-hot necessity of survival. "They won't. Because Karen made one fatal mistake."

David looked at me, confused and broken. "What mistake?"

"She thinks this is about my father-in-law's trust. She thinks this is a legal game played with paper and corrupt doctors," I said, pulling out my phone and dialing a number I hadn't called in three years. "She forgot that before I had Oliver, I spent six years working as an analytical biochemist for the state department of health. I know every single technician who works in that forensic annex. And I know how to audit a contaminated sample."

I pressed the phone to my ear as the line began to ring. "We aren't waiting for the state to deliver Karen's forged verdict. We're breaking into the chain of custody."
