Chapter 10 - THE WRATH OF TRUTH

Strong, gloved hands seized the tactical collar of my vest, hauling me out of the flooding hatchway onto the rain-swept weather deck just as the ocean swallowed the main deck of the Valkyrie.

"I got her! Pull! PULL!"

Master Chief Miller and a Navy rescue swimmer hoisted me over the railing into the heavy rescue basket suspended beneath a roaring MH-60S Seahawk helicopter. Beside me in the basket was the waterproof duffel bag, secured firmly beneath my arm.

Below us, the Valkyrie rolled onto its side in a massive vortex of foam, diesel fuel, and bubbling air, slipping beneath the dark waters of San Diego Bay before settling into the thirty-foot shipping channel.

A Coast Guard cutter maneuvered alongside the wreckage, its searchlights cutting through the storm to pull Reed and the remaining conspirators from the water in heavy chains.

The winch cable hummed as we were pulled upward through the freezing rain into the warm, illuminated cabin of the Seahawk.

Admiral Bennett wrapped a heavy wool emergency blanket around my trembling shoulders while a Navy corpsman immediately knelt beside me, cutting away my torn shirt to apply a rigid tactical chest brace over my broken ribs.

"Commander Vance," the corpsman said, his eyes wide as he examined the massive purple-black hematoma spreading across my side. "You have three displaced rib fractures and a severe pulmonary contusion. You shouldn't even be conscious, let alone fighting."

"I've got... an audit to finish," I whispered, resting my head against the helicopter's bulkhead as the rotors beat a steady, triumphant rhythm through the night sky.

Admiral Bennett sat down opposite me, holding the ruggedized tablet that was now downloading the decrypted files from the salvaged hard drives. A look of fierce vindication washed over his weathered face.

"Seventy-four million dollars in offshore shell companies," Bennett read, his voice trembling with quiet outrage. "Three defense contractors, two congressional staff members, and sixteen corrupt officers across four naval bases. You didn't just catch a rogue SEAL, Evelyn. You cut the head off a hydra."

"Sterling and Reed thought they were untouchable because they wore the uniform," I said, looking out the helicopter window as the lights of the Coronado naval base swept below us. "They forgot that the uniform belongs to the people, not to them."

Bennett placed a hand on my shoulder. "Tomorrow morning, the Pentagon convenes an emergency session. The Secretary of Defense wants you to present the findings personally."

I looked down at the bloodied handkerchief still clutched in my fist, then up at the stars beginning to break through the dispersing storm clouds.

"I'll be there, Admiral," I said. "And this time, I won't be wearing a clerk's badge."
