Chapter 7 - SHADOWS ON THE TARMAC

The mist over the interstate suddenly felt colder. Victoria Lawson’s panicked breathing hissed through the phone speaker like escaping steam, punctuated by the faint background sound of crying children and agents barking inventory numbers in her Scarsdale foyer.

"What do you mean, they think I have the cargo?" I asked, keeping my voice level, though my jaw clenched tight.

"Derek didn't just divert the oncology drugs for personal profit, Daniel!" Victoria wept, her aristocratic composure entirely shredded. "He was laundering supply chains for an offshore syndicate out of Montreal! They paid a forty-percent deposit up front! Sixty million dollars in high-grade therapeutics! When the feds intercepted the trucks in Jersey, the syndicate’s spotters saw your inspection tags on the crates! Derek’s contact texted his private phone ten minutes before the raid—they think you’re a rival broker who hijacked the haul!"

"Where is the syndicate contact now?"

"I don't know!" she cried. "All Derek told me from the holding facility was that their operations handler goes by the name of Castor. He operates out of an air freight hangar at Westchester County Airport! Daniel, please... if they come to my house, if they hurt my boys—"

"Give the phone to the lead federal agent in your living room, Victoria," I commanded.

"What?"

"Give the phone to the agent. Right now."

A rustle of fabric, frantic whispers, and then a deep, authoritative baritone came on the line. "This is Special Agent Harris, FBI Financial Crimes Task Force. Who is this?"

"Agent Harris, this is Daniel Bennett. I’m the primary witness in the Meridian Health logistics diversion. You have Special Agent Vance from HHS OIG running point downtown."

"Mr. Bennett," Harris's tone sharpened instantly with respect. "Agent Vance already briefed our field command. What do you have?"

"Derek Lawson's offshore handlers think the stolen shipment was intercepted by an independent competitor because of my inspection sign-offs," I explained rapidly. "The syndicate operates under a handler named Castor out of Westchester County Airport. They’re mobile, they’re armed, and they’re operating under the assumption that the cargo is unaccounted for."

There was a tense pause on the line, followed by the clatter of a keyboard. "We have multiple private charters logged out of Westchester tonight with flight plans filed for Quebec. Bennett, where are you right now?"

"Stamford. Five minutes from the state line."

"Get off the highway immediately," Harris ordered. "Do not go home. Proceed directly to the Greenwich Police Department. I’m dispatching a tactical escort to meet you there."

"Understood."

I hung up, but I didn't drive to the police station.

If there was one thing eight years in cold-chain logistics had taught me, it was that high-value cargo never sits in the open, and syndicates don't wait around for federal task forces to organize escorts. If Castor was running operations out of Westchester County Airport, he wasn't waiting for a trial; he was preparing to sanitize every link that connected him to Meridian before daylight.

And that meant Lauren.

Lauren was currently being processed at the federal detention complex in Lower Manhattan, but her personal vehicle, her encrypted laptop, and her private office server in Stamford held the routing algorithms that linked the entire operation together. If the syndicate wanted to erase their digital footprint, they would hit the Stamford depot where the raw data backups were housed before the feds could clone the servers.

I threw the G-Wagon into drive, spun the wheel across the wet asphalt, and surged back onto the access road heading toward the Stamford commercial park.

The facility was pitch-black when I arrived fifteen minutes later. The sprawling industrial park was silent, the rain turning into a torrential downpour that drummed violently against the metal roofing of the distribution centers.

At the far end of the tarmac, parked near the secondary entrance of Bay 4, sat an unmarked black cargo van with tinted windows and out-of-state plates. The side security door of the logistics building hung slightly ajar, its magnetic lock shattered by a pry bar.

They were already inside.

I parked the SUV two hundred yards away behind a row of decommissioned freight trailers, killing the headlights. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my mind remained ice-cold. I reached into the glove compartment, pulled out the heavy industrial flashlight I always carried for night inspections, and stepped out into the storm.

Slipping through the broken security door, the familiar scent of ozone, damp cardboard, and chilled refrigerant filled the vast warehouse. The only illumination came from the auxiliary emergency lights, casting long, eerie shadows across towering racks of pallets.

From the central server cage fifty yards ahead, low voices drifted through the cold air.

"...wipe the local RAID arrays and pull the physical drives," a man spoke with a thick, clipped French-Canadian accent. "Castor wants zero telemetry left on this node. If the feds pull the logs, the entire Montreal routing tree burns."

"What about the woman? Lauren Bennett?" another voice asked. "She’s in federal custody."

"She’s an amateur," the first voice sneered. "Our lawyers are already posting her emergency bail through an anonymous shell corporation. The minute she steps onto the street outside the courthouse, she’s getting into our car. She won't survive the night to testify."

I pressed my back against a stack of wooden pallets, my breath catching in my throat.

They weren't just covering their tracks; they were bailing Lauren out to execute her. Despite everything she had done—despite the betrayal, the arrogance, the vicious cruelty of her actions—she was a human being who had been blinded by vanity and steered straight into an executioner's trap.

I pulled out my phone, dialed Agent Vance's direct line, and whispered into the receiver: "Vance. Bay 4, Stamford Logistics Hub. Three hostiles on site destroying federal evidence. And they have a team moving to intercept Lauren at the Manhattan detention center."
