Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Wrath, A Father’s War

The dial tone hummed in my ear, but my mind was operating with crystalline, surgical precision. The old Ryan Vance—the corporate tactician who weighed risk against profit—was completely dead. In his place stood a father whose family was under siege.
I immediately dialed Marcus Reed, the former head of Navy SEAL tactical operations who now ran my private corporate security firm.
"Marcus," I said without preamble. "I need an immediate tactical trace on Eleanor Vance's black Maybach and her primary security detail. Target location is the Lake Forest estate. I want eyes on the perimeter, thermal imaging through the ground floor, and three extraction teams on standby within fifteen minutes."
"Understood, Mr. Vance. We've had a tracker on your mother's private vehicle since the merger security protocol went active last month. She entered the gates of the Lake Forest estate twelve minutes ago. We have three vehicles on site."
"Do not breach yet," I ordered. "Maintain full perimeter surveillance. If anyone attempts to move Grace or the children off the property, disable the vehicles immediately. I am going into surgery now. The moment the bone marrow extraction is complete, I am coming to Lake Forest myself."
I handed my phone to David Harris, who had just rushed into the room. "David, prepare three sets of documents: an immediate affidavit of criminal kidnapping and extortion against Eleanor Vance and Amelia Brooks; a full disclosure filing for the SEC detailing the fraudulent diversion of trust funds into Brooks Logistics; and an emergency petition for sole custody of all three children with Grace as co-guardian."
"Ryan, you're about to undergo general anesthesia for a bilateral iliac crest marrow extraction," David said, his eyes wide with concern. "It’s a major surgical procedure. You won't be in any condition to drive or confront anyone for at least twelve hours."
"Watch me," I said coldly.
Ten minutes later, I was wheeled into Operating Room 4. Dr. Miller stood over me, adjusting his surgical mask. "Ryan, count backward from one hundred."
As the sedative flooded my veins and the bright lights of the surgical suite blurred into darkness, the last image in my mind wasn't the fear of what Eleanor might do. It was the fierce, protective look in Grace's eyes when she stood between me and our son.
I'm coming back for all of you, I thought as unconsciousness claimed me.
When I woke up, the blinding white ceiling of the recovery room swam into focus. A sharp, deep ache throbbed in my lower back where the large aspiration needles had drawn the liquid marrow from my pelvic bone. The clock on the wall read 8:45 AM.
"Mr. Vance, you need to lie flat," a recovery nurse insisted, rushing to my bedside as I pushed myself upright. "You’ve just come out of a two-hour harvest."
"Where is Dr. Miller?" I rasped, my throat dry from the intubation tube.
"He's in the pediatric ICU right now. The graft was successful; they are transfusing the processed stem cells into Leo as we speak. His vitals are already stabilizing."
A wave of profound relief washed over me, but there was no time to celebrate. I swung my legs over the edge of the gurney, gritting my teeth against the fire burning in my hips. I stripped off the hospital monitor patches, pulled my clothes from the locker, and dressed with mechanical determination.
David and Marcus were waiting in the private corridor outside.
"Status," I demanded, buttoning my dark shirt.
"The transfusion is going flawlessly," David reported. "And Marcus’s team has confirmed that Grace, Maya, and Chloe are being held in the private library on the ground floor of the Lake Forest mansion. Eleanor and Amelia are both on the premises. Amelia’s private jet at O'Hare just filed a flight plan for Zurich departing at noon."
"They're planning to take the girls out of the country before the legal injunctions hit the federal registry," Marcus added, handing me a secure communication earpiece. "We have the local police captain on our payroll stationed two blocks away with three squad cars. He’s waiting for your signal."
May you like
"No squad cars yet," I said, my voice dripping with cold authority as we stepped into the private elevator down to the parking garage. "I want Amelia and my mother to believe they have won right up until the exact second their world collapses."
