Chapter 1 - THE BRIDE IN THE FLAMES
On her wedding day, Tara was trapped behind the jammed oak door of the burning bridal suite. Her fiancé, decorated Fire Captain Preston Hale, reached the door and promised to save her. Yet when his asthmatic childhood friend Khloe whimpered from down the corridor, Preston turned away, ordering rookie firefighter Wyatt to leave Tara behind while he carried Khloe to safety, casually telling Tara to wait. Wyatt defied the order and breached the room, pulling Tara out as her wedding dress caught fire. As she was rushed to an ambulance, Tara saw Preston wrapping his turnout jacket around Khloe, who was wearing Tara's stolen pearl bracelet. En route to the hospital, Tara flatlined. Three days later, Preston strode into the hospital corridor carrying flowers, expecting apologies and forgiveness, only to be handed Tara’s official death certificate by a trembling nurse. Paralyzed by disbelief and guilt, Preston collapsed to his knees, unaware that this paper marked not an end, but the beginning of an elaborate, calculated reckoning.
