Chapter 1 - THE KNOCKING BENEATH MY HOUSE

Dominic Vale returned to his Hudson Valley estate after a week in Atlantic City expecting nothing more dangerous than business calls and unfinished wedding plans. Instead, four-year-old Harper Carter appeared barefoot on the marble steps, grabbed his coat, and told him her mother had been missing for three days.

Harper's mother, Mia Carter, had managed Dominic's household for three years and had never once abandoned her daughter without saying goodbye. Yet Dominic's fiancée, Claire Bennett, claimed Mia had suddenly gone to Pennsylvania.

Nathan Cross—Dominic's closest friend and right-hand man for seventeen years—supported Claire's story.

Then Harper revealed something nobody could explain.

She had heard slow knocking behind the basement door.

Dominic followed her beneath the mansion and discovered a brand-new padlock on his old wine cellar. Nathan appeared just as Dominic ordered his guards to break it open, insisting Claire had added the lock for security.

Inside, Dominic found Mia bound to a wine rack, bruised, dehydrated, and barely conscious.

Harper ran crying into her mother's arms.

And while Dominic cut the ropes from Mia's wrists, Nathan stood in the doorway and quietly asked:

“My God... who did this?”

For the first time in seventeen years, Dominic looked at the man he had always called his brother and wondered whether he already knew the answer.
