Chapter 1 - THE ACCIDENTAL WITNESS

Vivian Hayes was a woman who believed in order, clipboards, and punctuality. For six years, she had run high-end events for Chicago’s wealthiest elite, navigating catastrophic floral disasters and temperamental executive chefs with calm authority. But nothing in her career prepared her for the night she ducked into an alcove behind the Grand Continental ballroom to escape two armed men hunting her down.
Minutes earlier, inside private Suite Four, Vivian had overheard a conversation she was never meant to hear: Dominic Lucchesi issuing cold, lethal commands about the Lake Michigan shipping docks, followed by a man’s desperate pleading and the sickening chambering of a firearm. Panicked, she fled. When heavy footsteps cornered her in a dimly lit hallway, survival overrode all reason. She threw her arms around the nearest stranger, dragged him down, and crushed her lips to his, praying the pursuers would dismiss them as lovers stealing a forbidden moment.
The stranger was tall, severely handsome, and possessed the chilling composure of an apex predator. Behind him, armed security had drawn weapons within a fraction of a second—only to freeze at a single flick of his fingers. Instead of shoving her away, the man wrapped a steel-strong arm around her waist and deepened the kiss with devastating, deliberate calm. The gunmen ran past toward the ballroom.

When Vivian broke away, breathless and trembling, she learned two terrifying truths. First, the stranger already knew her name from the gold coordinator badge pinned to her dress. Second, he was Roman Valente: the head of Valente Development, Valente Shipping, and the undisputed master of Chicago’s ruthless underworld.
Roman refused to leave her to Lucchesi’s men. Stepping past four heavily armed guards, he swept her into an armored black SUV speeding down Lake Shore Drive. When Vivian confessed she had overheard Dominic Lucchesi speaking of the docks, the atmosphere turned lethal. Roman ordered his right-hand man, Marco, to verify the information. Vivian clutched her trembling hands, realizing that in escaping one lethal predator, she had willingly surrendered herself to an even more dangerous beast.
